What is ussd gateway? rather what is ussd?

USSD stands for Unstructured Supplementary Services Data. Complex Acronym aside, USSD basically means the way to get text information back from the network by dialing a series of numbers usually starting with '*' and ending with '#'. Dialing such a number does not setup a phone call but instead if a service is provisioned it can display some textual information or notification on the screen. USSD can even go a step ahead and display a list of menu items for the customer to choose and the interactive session can continue from there-on. The beauty of the entire process is that USSD does not require a smart phone, even the most basic phones will working with USSD and unlike SMS, USSD is almost instantaneous without any delays.
USSD Gateway is the infrastructure node inside the operator network which can receive and process USSD requests and can also connect to Content Management Systems or 3rd Party systems to fetch data and respond back to the mobile subscriber.
