What is a sms gateway / router ?

Picture
A SMS Gateway / Router is a high capacity system which can aggregate huge volumes of SMS traffic and make an intelligent decision to route SMS traffic among multiple available paths. SMS Router also has a pwerful set of filters which can filter out SPAM messages, enforce Do Not Disturb policy and enforce a ton of other customized rules regarding the Sender, Recipient and the content. The ultimate goal of the system is to make sure that all messages are delivered at the lowest overall cost making sure that message priorities and delivery SLAs are satisfied.

Under the hood (technology)

Picture
SMS Gateway is designed to withstand extreme fluctuations of traffic load which is prevalent in the Messaging domain. The heart of the system is an open source enterprise grade Messaging Queue which performs the store and forward functionality. The system can be split into three main sections. The first part of the gateway is the set of modules which accept incoming SMS traffic from multiple sources and distribute the processing lode across node clusters. In the clusters the messages are verified, audited and then filtered before getting inserted into the queue. The queue forms the second stage of the the gateway. In the third stage a set of modules pick up messages from queue and decide the best possible routing method depending on the SMSC links available and the message priority and other available rules. Once the routing logic is decided then the message is again formatted for the destination route and then passed onto the appropriate SMSC. The life-cycle of the message ends with the delivery confirmation coming from the SMSC or with a delivery timeout on which the SMS Gateway decides the further course of action on the basis of configuration rules.
